Types of pocket square folds

Put simply, pocket squares are a nice addition to help elevate your formal or semi-formal style. Often, the pocket square is the centre piece of an outfit to enhance and stand out, a way of showing your personality in a simple yet effective manner. If you are sporting a blazer, suit jacket or deconstructed blazer etc a pocket square should be worn.

They add a touch of refinement in each outfit situation.

Below are a few folds that we feel are essential when it comes to showing off your style in your own way:

The Single/Square fold

This is the most standard of pocket square folds. It offers a clean and crisp finish to the suit/blazer, ideal for a business meeting or interview.

Step 1:

Begin with the pocket square fully unfolded and on a flat surface (for ease).

Step 2:

Fold to the width of the available pocket (In most cases straight down the middle would work)

Step 3:

Fold this from the bottom to create a completed rectangle shape, ensuring this is the same width of your suit pocket

Step 4:

Place with the bottom fold of the pocket square into the pocket as a base and adjust accordingly to create a single smooth strip.

The One-point fold

This pocket square fold has the simplicity to be ready for business but relaxed enough to style with a casual blazer, mix it up.

Step 1:

Begin with the pocket square fully unfolded and on a flat surface (for ease).

Step 2:

Fold diagonally down the middle to form a triangle

Step 3:

At the base of the fold, fold this corner over itself

Step 4:

Fold the other corner and make each fold the same size. Ensure this now approximately the width of your pocket and like the shape of an open envelope

Step 5:

Slide the end of your pocket square into your pocket, tucked all the way down, hiding the rectangular edges. Ensure only the triangular tip is on show.

The Puff fold

This is not for the formal occasions, it shows off your personality. Fun fact, Winston Churchill wore puff folds, especially with the polka dot style.

Step 1:

Pinch the centre of the pocket square allowing the edges to the corners fall.

Step 2:

Adjust to make sure it hangs evenly all around.

Step 3:

Ensuring you’re still pinching the centre of the material and pull the edges into a loose tube shape.

Step 4:

Delicately fold the dangling edges behind the formed tube shape until the pocket square is short enough to tuck into your pocket.

Step 5:

Slip into your pocket until just the rounded puff top is visible.

The Scallop fold

This is the type of pocket square fold that really works well at weddings and other big celebrations. Not particularly formal but so so stylish.

Step 1:

Begin with the pocket square fully unfolded and on a flat surface (for ease).

Step 2:

Take this and fold diagonally down the middle.

Step 3:

Fold this triangle shape in half again from the points at the end of the centre fold.

Step 4:

Avoiding a fold or crease, curl one of the doubled corners in and down at an angle.

Step 5:

Repeat step 4 and curl this double corner atop the other corner.

Step 6:

Tuck the exposed triangular point of the folder pocket square into the pocket first, slide in until only the curves are visible. They should lay neatly atop one another, creating the scallop shape.
